....... If you walk to the Macmillan Wharf (pier) that is located off of Commercial St. in center of P-Town. You'll see whale watching boat docked, waiting for the next load of curious spectators. Macmillan Wharf has been a Commercial fishing pier for over a 100 years. In resent years the commercial fishing industry has been hit hard due to depleted ''fish'' stocks and new regulations to protect the fish population. Whale watching has become a new industry that employees hundred of people and attracts tourist to the area.
P-town has a long history of commercial fishing and whaling. In the early part of this century whales were hunted with large whaling ships and shot with Harpoons for their meat and oil. Whales were hunted almost to extinction. Whales are still being hunted today on Stellwagen Bank and shot . Their not hunted for their meat but for their beauty and not shot with Harpoons but with Cameras. Whale watching has become a big business. And hundreds of thousands people go watching in Cape Cod during the summer season.
The Numbers of whales that have returned to migratory homes have increased dramatically since the plankton rich waters of Stillwagen Bank where made a marine sanctuary and commercial Whaling was banned.
