Massachusetts is one of the original thirteen states of what we now call the United States of America. The name Massachusetts was derived from the North American Indians of the Algonkian Nation. It appears to be a compound of the Algonkian language, Massa (great), wadchu (hill) and (set), meaning " near the great hill" Which refers to the Blue Hills near Quincy.
