Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans

.I Arrived in New Orleans on September 2 2005

I was working with ABC News as a sound man and drove down with a cameraman from New York and 20 hours later we where in Louisiana.

.........Since the city was flooded I made arraignments with Pro Bass the huge outdoor sporting goods company to pick up a small boat, I thought we might need it. The Boat was in Shreveport in the northern part of louisiana and by the time we got the boat it was dark so we decided to spend the night. The next morning we drove to Baton Rough with our new boat in tow and meet up with our ABC News producer at the hotel where ABC Had set up an Buro. We regrouped after the long drive from New York and then headed for New Orleans. It was around 11:30 am and we followed a cess-pool truck into New Orleans. ABC parked a bunch of motors homes on cannel street to use as a base of operation and they needed to be empted out. Cannel Street would be our new home for a couple of weeks.

......... It was an erie feeling driving down the highway into New Orleans. There was no traffic and no people walking around, we did see a few Police cars parked by exits leading into flooded neighborhoods and the occasional convoy of Army vehicles.

.........Most of New Orleans and the surrounding areas were under water we were driving on highway 10 into New Orleans which is elevated. As we drove on towards the city we could see water upto the roofs of houses and smoke in the distant from burning buildings that were left to burn because no-one could get to them. Army and Coast Guard Helicopters were flying overhead, it was surreal like being in a war movie. In some areas the exit ramps went into the flood waters and were used as boat ramps to do search and rescue operations. As we got closer to the City Of New Orleans we Have to make a few detours around the flooded neighborhoods to get to Canal st.

..........We were witnessing the worst disaster in the history of the United Stated America. For miles entire neighborhoods were under water. fortunately most of the city was evacuated. But not every one left some people stayed and got trapped by the rising waters. Stories that I heard, as the water came up people had to move from the first floor of their house to the second and then up into the attic. In some case people were trapped in the attic by the rising water and had to claw their way through the roof to get out. Some people drowned in their own attic by the rising flood water. we finally arrive in the city and would be here for awhile as we documented one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the USA.
